Section to add to pre-trip orientation emails:

Trip Hygiene and Menstrual Period Management

[insert what you normally would about pee/poop/hygiene here]

Tips for menstruation:

  • Supplies: Pack your preferred menstrual supplies for outdoor use (period underwear, cup/disc, tampons, pads, etc.). Even if you don’t plan on having your period during the trip, bring a backup just in case. We recommend bringing a sealable bag or container that separates used and unused supplies.

  • Waste: We’ll be in a pack-in, pack-out environment, so be prepared to carry out your trash, including used tampons, pads, and toilet paper. Please do not dispose of products in pit toilets or bury them. If using reusable products (like menstrual cups), be prepared to clean them with water and dispose of blood in catholes (6-8 inches deep) at least 200 feet away from water sources.  [edit or insert additional environment-specific info here, like where to dispose of blood based on trip location]

  • Privacy: While at camp, we’ll designate certain areas for toilet and period needs that are as private as possible to users.

  • Got questions or forget something?: Please don’t hesitate to reach out to  [insert designated person’s name and email] with any questions about managing your menstrual cycle outdoors. Whether you menstruate or not, it’s our goal to create a supportive and inclusive experience for everyone.

That’s it! Tomorrow, I’ll send over a resource for Pledge Action #2.
